Ban On Plastics: Zoomlion Disagrees With Prez Mahama...

I can understand the frustration of President John Dramani Mahama…but I believe that the solution is about managing the problem. What we have is not an issue of plastics but an issue of unmanaged plastics…” says Robert Coleman, Communications Manager for Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

Robert Coleman says even though the plastic menace is creating ‘huge damage’ in the country, if they are banned, thousands of people are going to be unemployed.

He was speaking in reaction to President Mahama’s warning that Ghana may go the 'Rwanda way' by banning the use of plastics if producers fail to properly manage plastic waste.

Speaking in an interview on Monday’s edition of ‘Kokrokoo’, Mr Coleman suggested that instead of banning, government should impose tax on those plastic companies and with that “we will be able to have money to recover the waste from the system and in so doing we will be creating a lot of jobs. If you ban the usage of plastics today, do you know the number of people who will be unemployed? Thousands….”

“I understand the frustration of the President but respectfully, I believe I hold an ambivalent view…you ban you create unemployment but if you regularize you create a lot of employment for the youth. Respectfully, you can’t compare Rwanda to Ghana; their population is very small…if we are able to tax the importers….I believe we can manage the situation” he added.

He also suggested that the President must "charge the Ministry of Science Technology and innovation to come up with innovative ways of how to use plastics"
