The former Ghana midfielder says Gyan has made the right decision regarding his move from Al Ain to Shanghai SIPG.

Former Ghana and Aston Villa midfielder Nii Odartey Lamptey has added his voice to Asamoah Gyan’s big-money move to Chinese side Shanghai SIPG.

Gyan sealed the deal last week after a successful four-year stint with Al Ain in the UAE Pro League.

The 29-year-old is set to become the 8th highest paid player in the world with a weekly wage pegged at $350,000.

His move has attracted mixed reactions back in Ghana. While some feel it is in the right direction, others have hit hard at the player, claiming he is being too money conscious at the expense of his form for Ghana.

Lamptey, who has played in the Chinese Premier League at Shandong Luneng, believes the Black Stars captain took the right decision.

“It is a very good move. I respect the Chinese league because it is one of the best in Asia. I also think the league in China is more competitive than UAE Pro League. I am saying this because I have played in both China and Dubai,” Lamptey told Goal.

“The money is very good. At the end of the day that is why we are playing. Football is now about money, and maybe this is his opportunity. When he retires, it would be about how much he has made to continue with his life.

“I also think he is looking at a new challenge. He has played in Italy, France, England and UAE. Maybe, he wants a new adventure,” he added.

Gyan is currently the highest paid African player. The only person who comes close is Manchester City’s Yaya Toure.
