The newly elected Member of Parliament for Talensi, Mr Benson Tongo Baba, was sworn into office on the floor of Parliament yesterday.

He took the oath of office and allegiance to Parliament which was administered by the Speaker, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho.

Welcoming him to the House, Mr Adjaho encouraged him to approach his work with diligence.

He reminded Mr Baba that his work as an MP was not limited to the plenary session alone but also the committee of which he would be made a member and also his constituency. As MP, he said, the new member represented not only those who voted for him but those who voted for other candidates as well.

"If you approach your work with that at the back of your mind, you will not have problems in your constituency, " Mr Adjaho said.

Majority Leader
The Majority Leader, Mr Alban S.K. Bagbin, said Mr Baba, who was a Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, had already distinguished himself in that position and urged him to work hard in his new post.

He said serving people was an "ordeal" because they always had great expectations and it was not easy to satisfy all their needs and expressed the hope that the newly sworn-in MP would seek the interest of his constituents and Ghana.

He said since Mr Baba had less than two years to serve as an MP before the next elections, he needed to work harder to win the confidence of the people by 2016 when the next Parliamentary election would be held.

Minority ' s views
A Deputy Minority Whip, Mr Ignatius Baffuor Awuah, who spoke on behalf of his group, urged Mr Baba to be an "all embracing person" and seek the national interest in all that he does.

He said if Mr Baba wanted to be re-elected in 2016, he had to work harder to win the confidence of his constituents within the one-and-a half year period before the next elections.
