The United Progressive Party (UPP) has sworn to give the two biggest political parties in Ghana a run for their money in the 2016 general elections.
They UPP is confident it is well placed to throw off the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its compatriot, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), considering the turmoil which their failure in governance had caused Ghanaians.
The UPP is the latest political party in Ghana after it received a final certificate from the Electoral Commission (EC) on May 27.
Ahead of the party’s national delegates’ congress, the executives are upbeat about making a huge difference in the 2016 general elections.
Party officials say all is set for the Saturday, July 18 congress to elect executives and a flag bearer.
Over 1,500 delegates are expected to vote in the congress on the theme, “New Route into Victory 2016”.
General Secretary of the party, Mr Razak Kojo Opoku, said the congress would also be used to send a strong signal to the NDC, NPP and the Ghanaian electorate about their preparedness towards attaining power in 2016.
According to him, the Ghanaian electorate was fed-up with the worsening economic conditions under the watch of the NDC administration, hence needed a change.
The NPP as the biggest opposition party, he indicated was not also ready for power as the party was disorganized.
“We want Ghanaians to change their minds, as Apostle Paul said, continuous renewal of your mind. We have tried NPP and NDC and they are not helping. Let’s try a new party that can bring economic self-reliance and that is the UPP”, he urged.
Asked if the UPP would not be affiliating with the bigger parties, Mr Kojo Opoku said the party was not formed to be as dormant as the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the People’s National Convention (PNC), the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and others.
He also lashed out at Voltarians and Ashantis for voting for the NDC and the NPP respectively based on tribal lines.
He therefore challenged Ghanaians to vote massively for the UPP in the 2016 general elections for economic transformation.
