4 Private Walkways Closed Down

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has ordered the closure of four private canopy walkways in the country until they are properly certified by the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GIE).

They are the Bunso Arboretum, Ave Maria in Tema, Jay’s Lodge, Obo Kwahu and the Aviation Social Centre canopy walkways.

The directive became necessary following Aboretum in the Eastern Region on July 1 and the absence of the relevant legislative
instruments to guide the operation of canopy walkways in the country.
In a statement issued in Accra on Wednesday, the GTA said “given the construction of new canopy walkways and the increasing interest of patrons of such bridges, it had become necessary to contact relevant agencies to determine the strength, carrying capacity and safety of patrons to guide the issuing of licences of such facilities.”

The statement was in relation to a letter written to the GIE to request its expertise in certifying the safe use of canopy walkways in the country.

Signed by the Public Relations Manager of the GTA, Mr. Ben Ohene-Ayeh and copied The Ghanaian Times, the authority called for proper signage, marking signs and other relevant information on what to do or otherwise and a comprehensive literature to be developed to guide visitors specially school children.
