Barely a year after the West Hills Mall, arguably one of the biggest shopping malls in the country, another mall is under construction at Achimota in Accra.
The new mall, situated between Phyto-Riker (GIHOC) Pharmaceuticals and the Achimota Office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on the Achimota-Ofankor Highway, will be an addition to the gradually increasing number of shopping malls in the country.
The internationally acclaimed construction company, WBHO, with a pleasant reputation in building construction, civil engineering as well as roads and earth works, is also becoming famed in Ghana with its expertise in constructing shopping malls.
One of its projects is the West Hills Mall, located at Donkonah, along the Accra-Kasoa road, said to be the biggest mall in West Africa.
To be opened before Christmas The Achimota Mall which covers 14,500sqm is scheduled to open in the last quarter of 2015.
Per its location, the facility which is expected to be a retail centre, will attract residents from Achimota, Tesano, Dome, Taifa, Ofankor, West Legon and surrounding areas. Already, some interested retailers whose names have come up, including Shoprite, Life Healthcare, Telefonika, Basilissa and Starlite, are said to have booked spaces.
Information from reliable sources say business at the mall will be on a single level with a variety of retail, fashion and restaurant outlets and food court. It will have ample open and covered parking.
The centre is scheduled to serve a population of over 84,000 within the primary catchment area.
When the Daily Graphic visited the area, construction was ongoing at a very fast pace with supervision from both local and expatriate engineers.
Job creation Information gathered from sources indicated that some aspects of the work had been sub-contracted to some local firms of repute so as to speed up the progress of work. However, the project managers have remained tight-lipped on the very details as attempts to get official information have been unsuccessful.
One entity that has begun an advertisement on the premises of the yet-to-be-completed facility is Shoprite, with its banner boldly displayed in front of the mall saying “Opening Soon”.
The ongoing work has led to the creation of employment as food vendors, traders and other itinerant business people around the area serve the needs of the construction workers.
