Wontumi Warns New EC Boss: If You Want Peace, Change The Voter Register

On Friday, May 15, 2015 the Electoral Commission begun the registration of new and eligible voters nationwide but had to suspend the exercise after notable political parties like the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Peoples National Convention (PNC) kicked against it.

Although the exercise was put on hold, the NPP seems not satisfied with the figures in the current register. The Ashanti Regional Chairman for the party, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako spoke to Peacefmonline.com in an interview and disclosed to us why his party wouldn’t allow the EC to use the current register during the 2016 general elections.

According to him, during the special limited registration exercise which was also organized in 2014 the EC deliberately expunged several names from regions perceived to be the stronghold of the NPP.

He promised not to keep his mouth shut until the new EC boss Mrs. Charlotte Osei, does something about the new register. Known in political circles as Chairman ‘Wontumi’, the Ashanti Regional Chairman for the NPP promised Mrs. Osei that she wouldn’t know peace until she changes the voters’ register.

From the data available to Peacefmonline.com as at 2012, 2,557,122 had registered in Ashanti Region and when it was updated in that same year, it reduced to 2,542,463.

14,659 names were expunged from the list. Then in that same year, 1,156,740 voters registered in the Volta Region and when the register was updated, it moved down to 1,152,286; meaning 4,454 names were expunged from the list.

Details of the current register obtained from Wontumi, has been published below
