Mrs Diana Asigri, a public health nurse in the Techiman Municipality has observed that teenage pregnancy is assuming alarming proportion in the area.
According to her, in 2012, the Municipality recorded 1,351 incidents of teenage pregnancy, saying the figure reduced to 1,300 in 2013 but it increased to 1,342 cases in 2014.
Addressing school children and some artisanal apprentices at a durbar in Techiman, Mrs Asigri said the victims are from 10 to 19 years.
Aimed at creating awareness of sexually transmitted infections and other reproductive health issues, the durbar was organised by DKT International Ghana, a health centred non-governmental organisation.
Mrs Asigri urged parents to play effective roles in fighting teenage pregnancy, pointing out that the future of the country would remain bleak if the trend is not brought under control.
Nana Faa Adomako, Queen mother of Mesidan in the Municipality who presided over the function, called on traditional rulers to re-visit cultural practices such as puberty rites, to curb teenage pregnancy.
