Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Lawson has commended former President John Agyekum Kufuor for his initiative to instill peace in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to him, the country needs the opposition NPP to form a formidable party in order to deepen democracy.

Speaking on Okay Fm’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, George Lawson saw nothing wrong with the involvement of Dr. Otabil and Rev. Prof. Martey in NPP meeting called former President Kufuor to maintain peace in the party.

He stressed that if the purpose of their involvement in the meeting is to ensure peace, there is nothing wrong even if they are registered members of the NPP; adding it is in the right direction for President Kufuor to call for that meeting.

“We need NPP because we can’t govern without formidable opposition. Without opposition the democracy in this country will not be bode well and so if something is going wrong in NPP, it should be our concern and it beholds cohesion to save NPP; I don’t have any problem with it”, he stated.

“I commend former President Kufuor for calling for peace in NPP; we need all the opposition so that we can make our democracy great and strong. If Dr. Otabil and Rev. Prof. Martey honored the invitation in good faith, there is nothing wrong with it…democracy will not survive this time without opposition”, he added.

He indicated that “if there is trouble in NPP then our democracy is shaky”; thus all political parties should be in good shape and strive to be peaceful at all times.
