The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) has cautioned the leadership of the country against taking the peace the nation is currently enjoying for granted. The policy think tank believes though the nation is enjoying relative peace now there are still indications that it could degenerate into instability.
Ghana has been seen as oasis of peace in the sub region for some time now though there are some flash-points in the country.
In an interview, the Deputy Director at CDD, Dr. Franklin Oduro tasked the political elites to ensure that the tension that characterizes elections decreases to maintain the peace and security in the country.
“The fact that Ghana has been fairly stable and peaceful in the 4th republic doesn’t mean that we should be jumping and clapping and we do know that elections are one of those triggers.
“Based on the history of our past we tend to see potential undermining of our peace and stability…I think that we are not completely safe yet...we may be stable but we need to work hard to maintain that stability,” he said.
The think tank is not the first to counsel government to take measures to ensure peace in the 2016 elections.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ablekuma West constituency, Ursula Owusu, had earlier warned of possible violence in the 2016 elections if the electoral reforms were not implemented.
Madam Owusu’s caution was premised on what she described as the Electoral Commission’s (EC) failure to resolve issues from the 2012 elections.
