Fire At Abossey Okai

Many containers loaded with lorry tyres at Abossey Okai spare parts trading area, in Accra, were destroyed by fire last night.

The fire started at about 7 p.m. and the area was engulfed in a very thick smoke.

About four fire tenders of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), were brought to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

An eye-witness, Foster Brenya, told The Ghanaian Times that the containers belonged to some traders who deal in spare parts at the area.

According to him, residents, including himself, noticed the fire when it began to emit smoke and, therefore, called the GNFS which responded quickly by sending in the fire tenders.

Mr. Brenya said initially, he was worried that the fire would spread to buildings nearby, but his fears were allayed as personnel from the GNFS fought to contain the situation.

“These tryes that are being burnt cost thousands of Ghana cedis,” he said, adding that the owners were not even around to try to salvage any of the goods. He explained that they could not do anything about the situation because the containers were all locked.

Collins Sam, a businessman in the area, shared similar sentiments, saying “dealers here should be schooled on how to manage inflammable materials such as this, to avoid such situations”.
