My Son Is Mentally Unstable - Mother of Gun Man

The mother of the man who took a locally manufactured gun to President Mahama’s Church says her son is mentally ill.

Charles Antwi was arrested last Sunday for wielding a loaded locally manufactured gun at the Ringway Gospel Centre branch of the Assemblies of God Church in Accra, where President Mahama worships.

On Tuesday, he appeared in an Accra High Court presided by Justice Francis Obiri and was sentenced to 10 years in prison for unlawful possession of firearm.

The ruling has however, raised a lot of questions as some lawyers feel the right procedure was not followed.

Reacting to the ruling, Afia Agyaponmaa should be taken to a Psychiatric Hospital and not jail.

According to her, after her son was deported from Italy after authorities realised that he was mentally unstable.

She narrated that her son, Charles was staying in Sunyani but left to Accra to visit his brother.

"Since he returned, he has been acting very strange. He was talking about how he was going to oust the late President John Evans Atta Mills....he wanted to kill President Mahama to take his position. We have taken him to a lot of places to seek for help for him; all to no avail. Currently, I don't have money to take him to a Psychiatric Hospital so government should help me...."
