Wee Smokers Caused Abossey Okai Fire

Eye witnesses at the Abossey Okai spare parts market, near the Central mosque in Accra where fire gutted the place on Monday have accused wee smokers who reside in an uncompleted building next to the storeroom of being behind the fire disaster.

Though it is unclear what caused the fire, the eye witnesses and residents told the DAILY HERITAGE when the paper visited the place that they believe the fire was caused by the wee smokers because anytime they finish smoking they sometimes leave their tools and substances in the building where they smoke.

They said “We want the police to investigate well because we believe that the fire was caused by the wee smokers in the uncompleted building because they only operate in the evening and when you pass by you will see some of their substances around.”

They urged the police to patrol the area more frequently to arrest the smokers because they are causing more harm to the residents and the workers around.

A member of the Believers Word Chapel told the paper in an interview that they were having a crusade where they had invited people for the programme when they were interrupted by the smoke from the warehouse which is the third house from their church.

According to Naa Merley, the programme came to a halt and members had to run away from the church premises since they were very close to the warehouse that was on fire.

Property worth thousands of Ghana Cedis including tyres got burnt in the fire disaster. No death was recorded.

The National Disaster Management Organization has also said it suspects Monday’s fire was caused by arson and blamed wee smokers in the area for the disaster.
