State Not Protecting Orphans - Group

A close-out meeting held to share the accomplishments of the SCASO (Strengthening Community Care and Support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children) project has revealed that Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) could have better chances to quality life if state institutions responsible for their care are well resourced to carry out their mandate.

According to the programme manager, Gladys Tetteh-Yeboah, during the implementation, World Vision found out was that though Social Welfare Officials are available, monitoring and following up on cases of OVCs are challenging because there are not enough resources.

Ms Tetteh-Yeboah made these disclosures at the close-out session of the SCASO project in Accra.

Talking about the project, she noted that SCASO started three years ago to strengthen community-based support for OVCs, which was implemented by World Vision and funded by USAID.

“Today marks the dissemination of what the project has achieved in terms of lesson, challenges and lessons learnt after implementing the programme for three years,” she added.

Speaking about another challenge, she stated that funding is crucial when dealing with OVCs; however, most care givers do not have the necessary economic cushion to support these vulnerable children.

“To address that challenge, we at World Vision incorporated training programmes for 606 care givers that would direct care givers towards an economic venture to be able to support.”
