Tema MCE Commends Ministry For Banning Plastics

Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, has commended the Ministry of the Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, for banning light plastic materials. The Ministry announced the ban on light plastic materials with less than 20 microns some few days ago, as part of government�s efforts to deal with the country�s sanitation challenges. Mr Odamtten said it was about time the country took such tough measures, therefore, the need to commend the sector Ministry for taking up such an initiative to solve the plastic waste menace. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the MCE indicated that the ban would go a long way to augment the work of the Environmental Health Departments of the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), in ensuring that their localities were clean. He urged investors to consider the establishment of more recycling plants to enable plastics with more than 20 microns to be recycled into other products. Mr Odamtten said scavengers must also be encouraged to gather more plastic waste for such recycling industries, to totally clear the environment of plastic waste, while creating jobs. He also called for an attitudinal change among residents, and urged people to refrain from indiscriminate littering as that could lead to the outbreak of communicable diseases. According to him, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly was poised to apprehend and prosecute offenders at its sanitation court to serve as deterrent to others.
