The Swedruman Council of Chiefs has ordered the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mary King Super Market, Mrs. Mary Monka, to appear before it for refusing to allow her workers to take part in the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise.

Nana Ogidigramm Asiedu Kobina Botwe, the Second, Swedruhene, gave the order when he led his sub-chiefs to take part in the clean-up at Agona Swedru on Saturday. The CEO would appear before the Sanitation Committee of the Council of Chiefs on August 6.

Mr. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Samuel Oppong, MCE, and Mr Charles Obeng-Inkoom , MP for Agona West, took part in the exercise. The Agona West and two other Municipal Assemblies hosted the Day which was the turn of the Central Region.

Nana Botwe who is also Adontenhene of the Nyakrom Traditional Area, said the super market must come and explain why she refused to allow her workers to take part in the exercise. The workers numbering 20 locked themselves up in the shop when the exercise was going on.

It took Security Officers and the Agona West Environmental Health and Sanitation Officers a hectic time to detect the exact spot in the shop where the workers had locked themselves up. The Swedruhene lamented that the Council had observed the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the township.

He said the Sanitation Committee of the Council would not hesitate to sanction unpatriotic people who would like to sabotage the efforts of the Agona West Municipal Assembly and the central government, to ensure environmental cleanliness.

Mr. Agyekum ordered the Agona West Municipal Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit to drag Dukes Petroleum Company to court for allowing its land in the centre of Agona Swedru to be used as a dumping site. The deputy minister said the situation could lead to the outbreak of cholera and other diseases.
