Journalists Boycott NPP In E/R

Journalists in the Eastern Region have expressed disgust about the deepening hostile environment being created by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives in the region for them.

According to the media men, the regional executives of the NPP have allegedly incited supporters of the party against some journalists they have tagged as in bed with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Some journalists, who are victims of the hostile tactics of the NPP, have decided to boycott programs organized by the party and have threatened to perpetually stop covering NPP programs if the executives refuse to change their attitude towards them.

According to the journalists, they have been receiving death threats, physical confrontations, insults and in some cases dismissal from functions organized by the NPP.

The journalists are Daniel Bampoe-Daily Guide newspaper, Kofi Siaw-Joy Fm, Kojo Ansah-Daily Heritage, Michael Akrofi-Peace Fm and Benjamin Owusu -Radio Gold, among many others.

The troubled media men say even though the NPP executives have no evidence to back the “unfounded” allegations leveled against them, they claim the journalists have been publishing stories to the detriment of the opposition party, a claim which has been refuted by the journalists.

They recounted that the Eastern regional correspondent of peace fm was nearly beaten to pulp this year at the Oyinka hotel during the national delegates’ conference of the NPP.

Kojo Ansah and Kofi Siaw were also verbally attacked by the regional organizer of the NPP, Appiah Kodua.

Daniel Bampoe of Daily Guide has been accused by the NPP of also leaking information to the NDC for exchange of money and has since been intimidated by some of the executives and supporters of the NPP.
The situation has affected the journalists in their line of duty, compelling them to boycott NPP programmes in the region.
