A man suspected to have murdered a 70-year old Muezzin at Alabar, Kumasi in April this year has been arrested. The muscular Baba Seidu was said to have been picked up at his hideout in Aflao after the police placed him on their wanted list. MURDER Briefing the press, the Ashanti Regional Commander of Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police, (DCOP) Nathan Kofi Boakye, said on April 4, this year at around 3:15 am, the suspect shot the 70-year Muezzin who ironically bore the same name as the suspect, Baba Seidu, who was on his way to the mosque to perform the Azan: call to prayers. He said the suspect thought the bag the deceased was holding contained money and shot him in an attempt to rob him only to realize that the bag contained a Qur�an and a radio set. According to DCOP Boakye, after committing the crime, the suspect fled the area into a hideout at Aflao in the Volta region. However, he said investigations and leads picked up at the crime scene pointed to the suspect who was eventually arrested and brought to Kumasi. CAR SNATCHERS In a related development, the police have arrested two men suspected to have snatched a taxi cab from its driver, Felix Amoah Mensah, on August 3, this year. The suspects are Akwasi Gyamfi, 24 and Kwaku Ampofo, 30, both drivers and were arrested at Offinso during a test drive by the second suspect who wanted to buy it. After snatching the car from its driver, the gangs had its registration number changed from AS 1822-14 to GW 6495-14 and offered it for sale to the second suspect. According to the police, on August 3, at around 5pm, Gyamfi in the company of two others now at large, chartered the cab from Adum-Kumasi to Asuofua Asaman in the Atwima Nwabiagya district. On reaching Asaman New site, Gyamfi, who was sitting at the back, pointed a gun at the driver and ordered him to get out while a second suspect now at large, who was at the front seat, also pulled a knife and pushed the driver out of the car after which they sped off with it. The following day however, Mensah spotted the car at Akom on the Offinso-Techiman road and with the assistance of the police at Offinso, they trailed the car and intercepted it. Gyamfi was alleged to have admitted to the police that he was offering the car for sale to Ampofo. He told the police that the car was given to him by one Romeo with the current registration number but could not lead the police to the whereabouts of the said Romeo. The two are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
