GMA Bares Teeth At Catholic Hospital, After Dismissal Of 14 Doctors

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is redirecting its wrath at the Holy Family Hospital, hours after authorities at the Techiman-based hospital sacked 14 junior doctors for withdrawing their services in solidarity with striking doctors.

The General Secretary of the GMA, Dr. Justice Yankson, served notice on Tuesday that no new doctors would be posted to the hospital, stressing “We are unfazed by the action of the hospital”.

Speaking in an interview with Joy FM, Dr. Yankson said the sacking of the 14 doctors was blackmail, adding “The next couple of months, we will see how they will get doctors to dispense health there and carry out surgeries. Management of the hospital would have to do it themselves”

Dr. Yankson insisted that the threat to withhold postings to the Holy Family Hospital “is not blackmail” and explained that “illegality and injustices have been perpetuated against us for long and it must stop.”

The General Secretary questioned why “public sector workers have been provided with conditions of service with the exception of doctors. What kind of system are we running? The wrong in society would have to be corrected.”

Doctors in the public sector are currently on strike to demand the provision of conditions of service for them. Several negotiations between government and the leadership of the GMA have failed to yield any positive result.

The doctors have resolved to return to work only when their demands are met.
