Ensure Diligence To Uphold The Integrity Of Assembly Elections

Electoral Officers have been asked to be more diligent in order to uphold the credibility and integrity of the upcoming district level elections. Mr. Paul Boateng, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), said they should do everything to make sure that the right things were done. Speaking at a day's workshop on the Assembly and Unit Committee Polls for Journalists in Kumasi, he pointed out that this was the way to remove distrust and build voters confidence in the Commission and the electoral system. The workshop was organized by the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), with support from the United States (US) Embassy in Accra. The goal was not only to aid the media to better educate and whip up voter enthusiasm, but to accurately report on the polls. Mr. Boateng expressed discomfort with the voter apathy that had been noticeable during the previous district level elections, and said the expectation was that this time around, things would change. He reminded the people to be vigilant to make the elections clean - free from cheating and irregularities. Professor Susanna Wing of the Haverford College, US, urged the media to be objective, fair and accurate, in its reportage, to end the seemingly polarization of the society. She urged them to be mindful of what they put out there, because of the serious repercussions these could have on the unity, peace, security and socio-economic progress of the nation.
