Man beats Woman for Rejecting his Overtures

A 37-year-old mason who allegedly hired the services of four others to beat up a woman who rejected his proposal and her boyfriend has been hauled before the Amasaman District Court B for indecent acts. Yussif Lamptey was charged with conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful entry, causing unlawful damage and assault. He is said to have hired the services of four other men, who are currently at large, to beat up a woman and her boyfriend for refusing to accept his proposal. Yussif pleaded not guilty to all four counts and was granted bail in the sum of GH2,000 with two sureties. The case has been adjourned to August 18, 2015 to allow the complainants to recover from the beatings. The facts of the case, as presented to the court by the prosecutor, Sergeant Salifu Nashiru, were that Emmanuel Boakye, 28, a taxi driver, and Mavis Awako, 26, are the complainants in the case. They reside at Alhaji and Israel, both suburbs of Accra. Sgt Nashiru said Awako had refused several relationship proposals from Yussif because she is in a relationship with Boakye. The prosecutor said at about 11 p.m. on July 26, 2015, Lamptey, with the assistance of four others who are currently at large, trailed Awako to the premises of Boakye and severely assaulted both of them. He said the group later dragged the two from Boakyes house to a park, where they continued to beat them. Boakye and Awako were later rescued by some passers-by and sent to the police station. There they formally lodged a complaint and medical forms were issued for them to attend hospital for treatment. Sgt Nashiru said on July 27, 2015, Lamptey was arrested and he admitted the offence in his caution statement. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to apprehend the four other suspects.
