The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has appealed to corporate entities to support the service with hydraulic platforms and trucks to enable its personnel fight fires on high-rise buildings.
The Chief Fire Officer, Dr Albert Brown Gaisie, who made the appeal, said the service needed the hydraulic platforms to enable officers to reach beyond five-storeys when fighting fires.
Currently, the service only has a turntable which cannot reach beyond the fifth floor.
Considering the increasing number of high-rise buildings in the cities, Dr Gaisie said it was important for the GNFS� to get the hydraulic platforms and trucks to enable its officers to reach above five floors.
He made the appeal when Tohaba Company Limited, a privately owned company that deals in fire-fighting equipment and materials in Ghana, presented 100 fire hoses worth GH�180,000 to the service.
Damaged fire hoses
Receiving the items on behalf of the service, Dr Gaisie said the hoses would be distributed to fire stations in the Greater Accra Region, adding that the recent fire outbreaks in the city had destroyed most of their fire hoses.
The explosion at the Goil Fuel Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle on June 3, 2015, for instance, resulted in the destruction of many of the service�s hoses. Dr Gaisie therefore said the donation by Tohaba Company Limited was timely.
He therefore urged other corporate entities to support the fire service with equipment since the government alone could not provide all their needs.
