Robbers Raid Mepe

Thieves have raided homes at Mepe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region making away with items worth several thousands of Ghana cedis.

The raid, which occurred on Saturday, August 15, took place at a time when residents and chiefs of the town where celebrating the annual Apenorfenor festival of mepe traditional area.

Today learnt that the thieves broke into an apartment belonging to the Mepe Development Association (MDA) and stole a brand new laptop computer valued at about three thousand cedis(GH₵3,000.00),some key documents and a cash amount of three hundred Ghana cedis(300) belonging to the Secretary for the MDA, Mr. Edem Kobla Borkor.

The Communications Director for the Mepe Development Association, Mr. Shanbaton Moses Kwesi Butsrugbe, who made this known to Today disclosed that some unknown youth of the town collaborated with some strangers to rob the people.

He said residents living on the outskirts of the town and in neighbouring villages moved into family homes at Mepe during the Apenorfenor festival, thereby creating the opportunity for robbers to enter peoples’ homes to steal in their absence.

The latest raid happened in the neighbourhoods around the Pentecost as well as the Global Evangelical Presbyterian Churches at Mepe.

The Reagent for Gbanubie Divisional Clan at Mepe, Torgbe Aglogu, also had his residence broken into with the robbers making away with an Echolac bag containing documents and traditional regalia.

According to Mr. Shanbaton Moses, a certain trend was emerging whereby thieves break into homes during festival periods in the month of August to steal cash and other valuables.

It is against this backdrop that the Mepe Development Association has announced there will be a reward package for anyone who will volunteer information leading to the retrieval of the stolen items as well as the arrest of the robbers

The residents of the town have also called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed Alhassan, to provide enough security, especially during the festival to avert such occurrence in future.

Meanwhile the Police at Aveyime also in North Tongu are investigating the robbery.

So far no arrest has been made by the police.
