AMA Boss Warns Traders

The Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, has appealed to businesses in the Lapaz, Kaneshie, Circle and Abossey Okai vicinities to put their things in order before the decongestion train descends on them.

“If you know you are not doing the right thing or occupying the right space, kindly move,” he stressed.

Dr Vanderpuije sounded this caution after a media tour to inspect progress of adherence by traders after a similar decongestion exercise was held in the Central Business District of Accra.

He stated that the exercise was to enable pedestrians and motorists walk freely and reach their destination in good time.

“Predominantly, this exercise is to ensure environmental cleanliness to guarantee that Accra is rid of filth,” he added.

Speaking on how sustainable this exercise would be, the MCE held that from time to time, the assembly will dispatch men to visit the markets.

If it would be recalled, after the June 3 disaster that recorded about 160 deaths in the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the Metropolitan Chief Executive recommitted himself to ensuring that the city is put in better standing.

That task saw AMA clear the longstanding Sodom and Gomorrah and also remove illegal structures that were scattered along some principal streets of Accra.

Two shoppers who The Finder spoke to stated that they were happy the paths have been cleared.

According to the two shoppers, the cleared paths would not only enable them shop with ease and in good time but also prevent them from abuse from some traders who display their wares on the now cleared space.

“I have been insulted and hit on the back for accidently stepping on wares displayed by a woman before,” one said.

The other also claimed the exercise would put pick pockets out of job since she has been picked due to the human congestion on the paths.
The team visited Kantamanto, Okaishie, Makola and Railways.
