Peace Council Chair Advises EC: Dont Only Involve Political Parties In Probing Voters Register

Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, has called on the Electoral Commission to seriously investigate the claims of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to strengthen the credibility of the voters’ register.

According to Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, the foundation of every election is the credibility of the voters’ register and since the current register’s credibility has been raised, it beholds on the Electoral Commission to probe further especially when the ruling NDC has also challenged the claims of the opposition NPP.

Speaking on Okay Fm’s "Ade Akye Abia" Morning Show, the Chairman of the National Peace Council averred his call on the EC does not mean only the political parties but should included but all civil society groups which are neutral in ascertaining how the voters’ register should be done before the 2016 elections.

“What we are saying is that due to misunderstanding surrounding the voters’ register by the NPP and other political parties and individuals, the EC should concentrate on the issues raised and probe further without involving only the NPP and NDC or all the political parties, but the probing should include the civil society which don’t belong to any party,” he stated.

To him, there should be consensus on the voters’ register so that when elections are conducted nobody can challenge the results; stressing, “we are not saying the EC should accept the proposal of NPP but we are calling on the EC to probe further with neutral stakeholders as well”.

He however urged the Electoral Commission to be diligent with the probing without limiting itself to only political parties.

“EC should listen to other views on the voters’ register before they conclude on a decision. Political parties will only provide their entrenched positions on the voters’ register and this tag of war will continue; we don’t want that to happen,” he advised.

Inasmuch as nobody can impose a decision of the Electoral Commission to go a certain direction, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante insisted the EC owes it a duty to win back its credibility as people have doubt about the Commission.
