Some youth believed to be members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Damongo Constituency of the Northern Region, who are unhappy about the decision of the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, not to contest in the upcoming primaries of the party have vandalised the party’s constituency office.

The irate youth also vandalised the personal office of the minister.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in an interview, the Northern Regional Director for Elections of the NDC, Mr Rashid Computer Tanko, said the incident happened in the early hours of Monday, August 31, 2015.

Minister’s decision

He said the youth claimed they were frustrated by the last minute withdrawal of the minister to contest in the primaries.

According to him, the fuming youth considered Alhaji Limuna as the best candidate for the party and the constituency.

“He is the right person for the party so it came to us as a surprised for the minister to say that he won’t contest again”, Mr Tanko quoted the youth to have said.

Mr Tanko, however, said Alhaji Limuna “is currently out of the country and he would come Wednesday, September 2, this year”.

Official communication

Touching on Alhaji Limuna’s decision to bow out, he said, the minister had not informed the party officially about his decision to withdraw his intentions to contest in the primaries.

Mr Tankoh who is also the Northern Regional Treasurer of the party said, “The minister informed us officially that he would contest in the primaries but he hasn’t notified us officially that he would no more contest in the primaries”.

In addition, he said, “It was only through his (Alhaji Limuna’s) personal aide who had said the minister would no more contest in the primaries.

He, however, noted that the party had sent the Deputy Regional Treasurer and Deputy Communication Officer to constituency to calm and access the situation.
Police version

When contacted, the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Ebenezer Tetteh, said the youth were mainly from Damongo and Busunu.

According to him, the reason the youth embarked on the demonstration was that when the minister declared his intentions to contest in the primaries, they (youth) supported him but only for the minister to pull out.

ASP Tetteh said so far, no arrest had been made but the police had been able to bring the situation under control.

He added that the youth dismantled an air-condition, broke some louver blades and furniture in the minister’s own office in the constituency while they also damaged two laptops and furniture in the party’s constituency office.
