Gakpey Contests Quarshigah For Keta Seat

The incumbent Member of Parliament for Keta, Mr Richard Quarshigah, is facing an uphill task in the Keta Constituency as three aspirants have picked forms to contest him. The three poised to give Mr Quarshigah a run for his money are Mr Kofi Kokubour, Rocky Amudzi and Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey. Already, Mr Gakpey, 40 who is a public health practitioner and communications specialist, is making inroads to unseat the incumbent as his campaign message of health promotion, job creation for the youth and micro credit for women engaged in economic activities seems to be well received in the farming and fishing communities. As a prove that his campaign is going well with the youth, a group calling itself Friends of Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey has emerged to campaign for him to win the parliamentary primaries on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Keta. The members contend that the municipality need a visionary leader to propel the NDCs objective and are of the view that Mr Gakpey possessed those qualities to lead that crusade. Making the call in Accra, the leader of the group, Mr Hassan Kobla Gakpo, said the area had suffered over the years due to trial and error politics and posited that we need people who are concerned about the total development of the area. According to Mr Gakpo, the promotion of health, education and jobs would be the main focus of their preferred choice, adding that Mr Gakpey has been tested and he has proven to be dynamic enough to redeem the ancient respected town from its current deteriorating state. He said Keta, a once vibrant and tourist attraction in the country, had lost its value and explained that they were of the strong belief that Mr Gakpey would reverse the ailing situation and bring smiles to the faces of the people of this great city. No unity Mr Gakpo said their candidate contested the slot in 2012 with the past Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Richard Larssey, and came close to winning. He said when the current MP, Mr Richard Quarshigah, won the slot, we all pledged to support him to bring development to the area but he largely divided the constituency and sidelined the supporters of those who contested him, adding that there was no unity in the constituency. This internal party competition is healthy as it promotes rejuvenation which is good for grassroots participation and growth for our burgeoning democracy Mr Gakpo intimated. Mr Gakpo lauded the party leadership for introducing the expansion of the electoral college and allowing as many members as possible to vote for their preferred choice, saying we are reaching there.
