Mahama: Nkrumah Incarnate?

President John Dramani Mahama’s vow to become a leader comparable only to the country’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, but widely doubted by his critics, was evident when he presented his nomination forms to National Executives of the ruling party to seek a renewal of his mandate on the ticket of the NDC last Monday.

Cataloguing his achievements in the various sectors of the economy to the amazement of all NDC supporters gathered, the astute communication-expert-turned President statedthat he will clinch a second term victory at the first round of the 2016 elections.

President Mahama, who described the performance of his administration as “impressive”, said the NDC is the most successful political party under the Fourth Republic, for which reason Ghanaians continue to have confidence in the NDC government.

President Mahama added that despite the challenges his government had faced, his government’s performance has been impressive and spectacular as lots of tangible development can be seen across all the sectors of the economy.

Addressing a teeming crowd of supporters after presenting his nomination forms at the party’s Adabrakaheadquarters, Monday, President Mahama recounted his government’s achievement in various sectors of the economy, from education, health, water, roads among others. He averred the NDC had undertaken the single largest investment in secondary education expansion.

According to him records show that the country since independence has built about 600 Secondary Schools, however, his administration, within the short period, is on the verge of adding nearly 200 ultramodern community day high schools. He explained that 123 are at various stages of completion and that by end of 2016 about 173 of the senior high schools would have been added to the national stock.

On the health sector, the President asserted that his administration has ensured an improvement in healthcare delivery with the provision and allocation of the necessary equipment to hospitals across the country.

“We have built dozens of polytechnics, hundreds of CHPS compounds, provided modern diagnostic equipment, CT Scans, MRI machines and also trained several health professionals, all in a bid to ensure quality health delivery”, this is aside a number of teaching and or, specialized hospitals at various completion stages. They include, the new Kumasi military hospital, University of Ghana teaching hospital, Ridge hospital in Accra, Police hospital, upgrading of the Tamale teaching hospital and the new Wa regional hospital.

“We’ve done an equally good job in the transportation sector, we have built several roads, expansion works on the TakoradiHabour is ongoing and we’ve also constructed the Kumasi Airport among other several projects”.

These achievements come on the backdrop of numerous problems that confronted the President’s tenure in office including the almost nine month opposition challenge of his mandate in court, exacting censure from so-called independent analysts and hostile civil society and labor unrest.

Principal among projects the Mahama administration has so far fast tracked or at completion stages include, the Cape Coast stadium, the Kotokoraba market, Kommenda sugar factory, water processing plant in the Eastern region, Teshie desalination project , the Kumasi shoe factory and the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant in the Western region.

Others include the various major road projects nationwide, the Tamale International airport, the Youth Entrepreneurship Fund, the Awoshie -Pokuase road, the helipad for the military hospital, acquisition of two new jets for the military, new ships for the navy and marine police, expansion works at Brong Ahafo and Volta universities and the advance stage of the proposed university for the Eastern region.

The rest are the retooling of the Ghana national fire service with over 120 fire tenders, completion of about 9000 houses for civil servants nation-wide, Takoradi harbor expansion, Mampong water supply and Rural electrification across the country, commissioning of a €38m fibre optic infrastructure, among other impressive projects.

The near completion of the Kwame Nkrumah interchange, the 37-La beach road project, Spintex road bypass, expansion of Kotoka international airport, the airport city project, the completed Kpong water expansion project all add up to record of President Mahama in this short while.
