Ashgold Crowned ChampionsOly, Lions, BA Out!

It was mixed feelings at the Accra Sports Stadium yesterday when AshantiGold were crowned winners of the 2014/2015 First Capital Plus Premier League while Accra Great Olympics had to bow out of the top flight despite winning 2-1. After missing two penalties and blowing several clear chances away, it was pretty obvious that Olympics were heading back to lower division football. The home team started the game on a very bright note and created some good chances but were very abysmal upfront as they failed to make their opportunities count. To make things easier for Olympics to take the lead, Referee Kweku Boateng pointed to the spot after Kwame Boateng was fouled by his marker in the penalty box in the 30th minute. Boateng stepped up but Fatau Dauda pulled a majestic save to deny the home team the lead which ensured the visitors settled in the game before recess. Fatau was substituted early in the second half after he was carried off the pitch following a knock he received in an attempt to save a ball in his area. After pulling off some great saves, the substitute later fouled Olympics attacker to give the home team another penalty which was surprisingly fired wide off the post by Dan Quaye. A rather composed and relaxed AshGold took the lead through impressive Osei Baffour in the 77th minute with a beautiful curler following a swift counter attack. Two quick goals from Agbashie Doetse in the dying minutes of the game was not enough to save Olympics from relegation. Olympics were relegated in 2010 and it took them four years to return to top flight football only to be sent back after just a season. AshGold, however, were consistent from the beginning of the season and it was all fireworks amidst excitement and glamour as they laid hands on their fourth trophy. It took the Miners 19 years to grab their fourth trophy and they could not hide their joy as they were led by Fatau to receive their medals and trophy.
