The Police in Kumasi have arrested three people believed to key members of a syndicate in the city that usually defraud people who want to buy vehicles. The suspects, who are currently in police custody, are Joseph Osei, Yaw Koranteng and Kwabena Boakye. The police are also on the heels of Evelyn Prempeh and David Appiah, who are said to be members of the syndicate. They usually paste For Sale notices on vehicles and defraud people that show interest in buying the said cars. The three suspects were arrested by the police on September 2, 2015 when they were about to defraud one Ibrahim. Addressing the media in Kumasi, DCOP Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said the three suspects allegedly defrauded one Gideon Afriyie Tuffuor on August 28, 2015. He disclosed that on the said date, Gideon spotted a Toyota Corolla vehicle registered GR 1938-14 which was being sold and called David Appiah, whose telephone number was on the notice. The Police chief said Appiah asked Gideon to contact Kwabena Boakye, who claimed the car, which was being sold at GH21,500, belonged to his wife. Gideon offered to pay GH17,500 which Boakye agreed. Gideon later called Boakye on phone and informed him that he was ready to buy the car. Boakye then asked Gideon to meet him at Bomso, near Kpogas Furniture. According to him, when Gideon met Boakye at Bomso, the suspect asked him to wait for Evelyn Prempeh since he (Boakye) was going to meet someone at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Hospital. Minutes after Boakye left the place, Evelyn Prempeh and David Appiah arrived on the scene and Gideon gave an amount of GH17,500 to them in exchange for the cars key. Evelyn, after receiving the money, left the place leaving behind David Appiah. He noted that Gideon requested for the spare key of the car from David Appiah, who asked the complainant to allow him to retrieve it from Boakye. Gideon and his friend subsequently went outside but the vehicle was nowhere to be found and they reported the case to the police. On September 2, 2015, Gideon became suspicious when he spotted a Honda Civic car registered GR 8821-14 with For Sale notice pasted on the windscreen. He subsequently asked his friend Ibrahim to call the number and show interest in the deal. Yaw Koranteng later asked Ibrahim to meet him at Aboabo to begin negotiations, a request which Ibrahim accepted. The Police said Boakye and Yaw Koranteng meet Ibrahim, who managed to secretly take pictures of Boakye, which he later showed to Gideon, leading to the arrest of the suspects. DCOP Kofi Boakye said investigations by his outfit indicate that one Osei Nyarko, popularly called Captain, allegedly defrauded an unsuspecting female teacher at Juaso, who wanted to purchase an unlicensed Pontiac Vibe car in the Ashanti region to the tune of GH25,000. The suspect, after receiving the money at the Manhyia Hospital in Kumasi, bolted away with the car.
