Veep Breaks Ground For New Legon Hostel

Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Kwesi Amissah Arthur on Monday called on the private sector to support public agencies in the country to deliver on infrastructure projects in the country.

He made the remarks at a ground breaking ceremony for the commencement of construction work on a 1000-bed students’ hostel and four new buildings for the colleges of Humanities, Education, Basic and Applied Sciences and Health Sciences for the University of Ghana.

Mr. Amissah Arthur said the University must show new ways of doing things and news ways of delivering projects, thus the university must put in more revolution in a country such as ours. He said government has made efforts to encourage the public system to adopt the ppp approach to delivering infrastructure projects.

Vice president Amissah Arthur said there has been Lot of problems getting people to change from the old ways of doing things to news ways of doing things. Old ways was at a time that government resources didn’t have constraint making it easy to do government project with resources that time.

The Vice President said these days there have being a significant constraint in new ways in doing projects in the country. So it is very crucial in involving the Private sector.

The ceremony w took place at the site for the College of Humanities, behind the Geography and Resource Department on the University’s main campus. The project follows a landmark agreement signed between the University and Africa Integras earlier this year.

The construction which commenced today September, has a completion date targeted for September 2017. The project has benefited from the support of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation alongside Africa Integras and its funding consortium including US publicly listed investors

The project is structured as a 25-year Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) arrangement, which implies the private company, will be allowed to build and operate the facility for 25 years after which it will be transferred to the University to full control and management. The University of Ghana today signed a landmark agreement with Africa Integras at a ceremony at the Great Hall.

The $64MM USD project, which was structured as a 25-year Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT), is the first of its kind with a public university in Africa.
