The flag bearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has appealed to party operatives and supporters to unite for the good of the party to improve their chances in the 2016 general election.
He pledged that if it depended on him, he would do everything within his power to unite the rank and file of the party to enable them to wrest power from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Interacting with party executives from all the 11 constituencies in the Upper West Region as his “Rise and Build” tour reached Wa yesterday, Nana Akufo-Addo said it was time for the party to reclaim lost grounds in the region, including parliamentary seats, they lost to the NDC during the last elections.
The NPP has recently been embroiled in internal conflict that has centered on the party’s General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong, and National Chairman, Paul Afoko, with the latter being the target for suspension following a proposal by the National Council of Elders of the party.
Answering a question on the obvious cracks that have dogged the party in opposition, Nana Akufo-Addo said it was time to bury their differences and tackle the common target to ensure victory for the NPP in election 2016.
“In 2012, the NPP was weak in all three northern regions, apparently because the NDC fielded a candidate from the north,” he said. “But now we all know the quality of leadership offered by the NDC and the President.”
He said the party could not afford to surrender parliamentary competition to the NDC as it happened in the 2012 election, and appealed to all members to support their parliamentary candidates to victory.
The NPP lost the three seats it held before the 2012 elections as the NDC won 10 and an independent candidate from their stable clinched the 11th seat in a virtual clean sweep of the Upper West Region.
He said he intended to promote health and agriculture in the Upper West should he become Ghana’s next president.
Nana Akufo-Addo’s itinerary included meetings with various groups in the region, including religious leaders.
Nana Akufo Addo will set off for Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region today to continue with his "Rise and Build" tour.
