Adentan Police Commander Appeals For Staff Accommodation

Chief Superintendent Martin Ayiih, the Adentan Divisional Police Commander, has called on the public to offer residential facilities to the members of the service within their areas of operation. He said the rank and file in the Adentan District live too far from their posts and as a result of the daily vehicular traffic, response to many emergency situations is often slow. Speaking in an interview with the GNA, Chief Superintendent Ayiih said the discussions for the need for a barracks have been on-going both within the service and other sectors of the society. He said unlike what occurs in other highly developed places, the need for a barracks system for a typical Ghanaian society, needs to be given careful consideration. He said the barracks scheme is relevant as the dynamics of the society demands that the police needs to be close and within their area of operations. Chief Superintendent Ayiih said in the Adentan District, some members of the service live as far as Dansoman, about two districts away; others live at Achimota and other distant areas, and they have to meet various traffic and other situations before they arrive to work and attend to the needs of the District. He said the Police often allocate funds for accommodation, transport and communication needs but such important facilities are frequently controlled by the private sector, which creates inconvenience for the personnel. Chief Superintendent Ayiih said he looks forward to media reports that SSNIT has decided to construct a number of police posts for the service. He said much as the gesture is appreciated, what is equally needed is residential facilities to accommodate the police who would man such posts.
