Police Fired Countless Bullets At Chairman Wontumi?

After Wednesday's unfortunate incident which saw some officers from the Ghana Police Service attack unarmed demonstrators who were alleged to have flouted their authority, it was reported that the Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako had kicked the bucket.

His aide, Mr. Andy Owusu, in a statement issued Thursday, dismissed the reports saying Chairman ‘Wontumi’ is alive and not dead.

Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman ‘Wontumi’, had joined Members of Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) and Movement for Change (MFC) to picket the Electoral Commission (EC) for a new voters register.

But the groups together with the NPP chair were literally whipped into line while scores of them were arrested when they allegedly attempted to deviate from prior approved routes.

The police, clad in full riot gear resorted to brute force by using horse whips, batons as well firing tear gas canisters and water cannons on the demonstrators for allegedly using unapproved routes in their march.

Statement Below

I write to allay all fears and further refute all rumors which seek to say the Ashanti Regional chairman of the NPP- Chairmen ‘Wontumi’ is severely hurt and others claiming he is dead.

We wish to let the general public, friends and sympathizers of chairman ‘Wontumi’ to know that, though, he remains injured by the bullets thrown at him by the 'security Men', he is duly alive and all forms of rumors claiming he has been shot dead in the unfortunate police brutality on the Let My Vote Count Alliance must be ignored.

It's quite regrettable that we witness such forms of inhuman and unpopular reactions from the police to a peaceful demonstration by unarmed men seeking to address a concern which we believe would seek to serve the country well in the immediate future.

This is something we must collectively reject and largely condemn these actions from our police service. We believe there are a lot of policemen in the country working on the supreme interest of Ghana, while we have others who are just in the service to serve the interest of the NDC and this event further tells it all.

We don't want to believe chairman ‘Wontumi’ was a target but, it's unfortunate we are forced to believe so because it was shocking how many bullets were directed to him in this sadden event. But, we are grateful to God he is still alive.

We wish to send out a clear warning to such police personnel who have been compromised and just working for the NDC to desist from such unacceptable acts else, they face our wrath.

We further want the police administration to investigate this matter and fish out all who have pledge their supreme will to disrupt a worthy measure, all to sustain this insensitive and corrupt NDC administration in power.

But, if the police administration would not act swiftly to discharge these 'men of serve to the NDC', they leave us with no options than to meet them as our political opponent instead of the neutrality we have placed them.

Signed

Andy Owusu Special Aide to Chairman 'Wontumi'
