After several weeks of thrilling football matches, Winneba United FC were crowned champions of the R. C. Ekem Cup. The maiden edition of the tournament attracted a huge crowd including important dignitaries who were invited to witness the final between Winneba United FC and Sun City FC- a fixture which ended 1-0 in favour of the former. The winner of the tournament was awarded with two thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC2,000), whiles second and third placed teams were given GHC600 and GHC400 respectively. The tournament was sponsored by Run-OFF Ltd and supported by Challenging Heights; a non-profit organization was structured to honor the many contributions Mr. Richard Ekem has made to the Winneba community. In an address to the press at the end of the match, Mr. James Kofi Annan stated that Mr. Richard Ekem, the honoree was happy his contribution to the town has been recognized. He added that the event had been impactful and has helped them unearth several football talents. He also touched on the difficulties he faced before organizing the event but was grateful he overcame them and promised to stage similar events in the future.
