IBES Phase II To Commence In November 2015

Ghana Statistical Service, in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Industry has initiated the Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES) to be conducted on the full set of economic units across the country.

The Government Statistician, Dr. Philomena Nyarko explained that IBES is structured in two phases, which will cover a sample of 31,152 non household establishments cutting across all sectors and subsectors of the economy.

Dr. Nyarko said the information to be collected from these establishments during the census includes; location details, assets, capital formation, inputs/expenditure, outputs/revenue, contact details, and employment details of the establishment.

According to the Statistician, the Phase I of IBES has been completed, while the fieldwork for the second phase is about to begin with preparatory activities almost completed.

She said “The just ended Phase I of IBES was a census of all establishments in Ghana which was successfully carried out. At the end of the survey, the service will soon publish four reports, which are the outputs produced based on data collected from the Phase I. The reports include employment, job creation, summary, and business register.”

The Statistician pointed out that the reports gathered would include information that provides the basis for effective policy and decision-making for businesses, and public policy makers.

Dr. Nyarko added that the second phase of IBES involves the collection of detailed information about the operations of businesses scientifically selected from the pool of establishments in the sampling frame (Business Register) obtained from the first phase.

She said “The second phase is purposed to provide reliable, timely and relevant economic statistics to support the formulation and implementation of policies and strategies that can stimulate the growth of all sectors in the economy. Thus, the results will not only feed needs of the Statistical Service, but for business decision makers in the private sector, public policy makers and researchers as well.”

Anthony Krakah, IBES Coordinator said after the survey, private sectors can make business decisions based on the high quality data.

Mr. Krakah said “Development programs on businesses can be better monitored; Policy makers can make informed decisions on the economy.”

He added that the survey would be conducted by trained field personnel from November 9, 2015 and end in December, 2015. After that data processing will start in January, 2016 which report is expected to be published in December 2016.
