Police Loyalty Should Not Be For Any Political Administration - Sammy Awuku

“Ghana belongs to all of us; administrations will come and go. Your loyalty should be to the state because administrations will come and go,” Sammy Awuku, NPP National Youth Organizer told some police officers who were mercilessly beating one of the demonstrators in the Let My Vote Count Alliance demonstration for a new voters’ register.

A planned peaceful demonstration turned violent after some of the protestors defied Police order and attempted to move to the premises of the Electoral Commission (EC) to present their petition.

Members of the LMVCA and its allied civic groups and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) were tear gassed and shot with rubber bullets after having veered off from the approved route to picket at the Electoral Commission.

Dozens got injured and arrested in the melee including leading NPP member Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.

But Sammy Awuku on Okay Fm’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show grimaced at the action of the police in the peaceful demonstration, saying the police is putting Ghana in danger for carrying out such brutish operation against demonstrators who had not violated any law.

“If you are wearing police uniform, you are not supposed to be seen as crusaders of certain individuals and if your work is seem to please certain individuals then it is Ghana they are putting in danger,” he asserted.

He wondered why the police fired live ammunition at the demonstrators, hinting that the demonstrators didn’t change the routes because the melee took place at Farisco which was part of the route to the final ground of the demonstration.

He asserted the action of the police on the Wednesday Let My Vote Count Alliance picket is meant to put fear in Ghanaians.

He again indicated that the action of the police is the administrative style of the Director-General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP John Kudalor as he looks forward to him being replaced by the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
