Im Disappointed In Nana Addos Remarks - Listowel

General Secretary of United Front Party (UFP) Listowel Nana Kusi Poku has expressed disappointment in the statement made by the flag bearer of the biggest opposition party in Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, over the police brutality meted during the Let My Vote Count (LMVC) demonstration.

Speaking on Accra based Okay FM Friday, Listowel stated he is disappointed in Nana Addo because the flag bearer appears to be on the side of the protesters who breached the law.

“If indeed the police beat these demonstrators, why then do you have to jump and start accusing the police when the protestors breached the law? He quizzed.

The leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the establishment of a commission of enquiry to investigate police brutalities on unarmed protesters demanding a change of the voters register.

He described as shameful, the brute force used by the police to control the demonstrators in a democratic state like Ghana.

Nana Akufo-Addo made the call while addressing party supporters in the Upper East regional capital, Bolgatanga during his Arise and Build tour of the region.

He indicated that Ghanaians after years of dictatorship have accepted multi-party democracy thus will no longer tolerate acts to cow them into submission.

“This peaceful demonstration was turned by the police into a bloody affair; it’s a great shame on our country and a tragedy for Ghana” he added.

Nana Akufo-Addo also urged the ‘freedom fighters’ not to be intimidated by the action of the police but rather fight for a new register ahead of the 2016 elections.

“No amount of intimidation is going to stop those of us asking for a new electoral roll to go about our peaceful advocacy for a new register” he stated.

But the Chief Scribe of a minority opposition party said the police were only exercising their rights and so they should not be blamed.

In his view, the police did nothing wrong by ensuring that law and order reigned.

He added that the security personnel used "reasonable force" because the protesters "deviated" from the agreed path.

Touching on the reason for the demonstration, Listowel Nana Kusi Poku said “the demo was very senseless”.
