The Members of the Ghana Chemical Society GCS) have called on the government to formulate and implement policies, and strategies favourable for the development of alternative energy sources to avert the current energy crises facing the country. The members also called for adequate funding from the government and other stakeholders to conduct research on alternative energy and to implement the research findings on energy. These were contained in a communiqu� issued and copied to the GNA in Cape Coast, at the end of the 18th annual Conference and General Meeting of GCS organized by the West-Central branch of the Society in Cape Coast. The conference under the theme �Solving Ghana�s Energy and Environmental Challenges: The role of the Chemist �, was to among others create awareness on the potential application of nanomaterial for solar energy production within the energy sector of the Ghanaian economy. It was also to bring to the attention of the government and all stakeholders to the need to channel resources into the development and prioritization of nuclear energy and fuel cell as alternative sources of energy to augment the hydroelectricity grid. The members also stressed that the government should involve the Ghana Chemical Society, Ghana Science Association and other relevant bodies in the formulation, initiation and implementation of energy, as well as environmental policies. �The Chemical Society should take the lead in advocacy, collaboration and research towards promoting green chemistry and utilization of alternative energy sources in the country,� they added. The occasion was also used to elect new executive members to steer the affairs of GCS for the next two years. Professor D. K. Essumang was elected as the President, while Dr Francis Nsiah was elected the Secretary with Mr J. E. Koranteng-Addo getting the Treasurer position. They were sworn into office by Prof. A. A. Adimado.
