The National Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Private Second-Cycle Schools (CHOPSS), the Reverend Prince Kwame Katu, has called on the Government to ensure that students in private second cycle schools benefit from State and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) Scholarships. He described the situation where students in private schools are not considered for either the Government or COCOBOD�s scholarship in spite of the fact some of them have parents, who are cocoa farmers, as unfair and completely unacceptable. He said it was also time privately run basic schools were included in the Capitation Grant. The Rev. Katu was speaking at a three-day delegates meeting of the CHOPSS at the Christian Village in Kumasi. It was under the theme �Providing Quality Education: The Role of Private Second-Cycle Institutions�. The Rev Katu said there should not be any illusion on the part of anyone that, given the needed push and attention by the Government, private Senior High School schools would perform better just as they were doing at the basic level. Nana Asampon Boakye III, the Asamponhene of Manhyia, who represented Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, said the vision of the Asante King is to extend support from his Educational Fund across the country. He commended the private schools for the good job they were doing to promote education. Mr Joseph K. Onyinah, the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, said education was a powerful tool for fighting poverty. He also acknowledged the private institutions for complementing Government�s efforts at promoting education. He, however, advised them to improve their facilities so as to be listed for the Computerized School Selection and Placement System.
