Ghana To Mark World Heart Day On September 26

The National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC) and the World Heart Day Planning Committee will mark this year�s World Heart Day on Saturday, September 26, 2015. This year�s celebration will be held under the theme �Creating heart-healthy environment�. According to the planning committee, they have rolled out series of activities to ensure people have the best opportunities to make heart-healthy choices and reduce their own cardiovascular disease risk and that of those around them. Briefing newsmen, member of the committee, Mr Entsua-Mensah said the celebrations have already begun with a massive cardiovascular awareness campaign with their ambassadors Kwabena Kwabena and Abigail Baciara (2014 Ghana�s Most Beautiful winner). He said they will climax this year�s activities with a health walk, which will start at the Efua Sutherland Children�s Park through Independence Square to Osu Oxford Street, then down to Danquah Circle to Ako Adjei interchange to Ridge roundabout and end at the Efua Sutherland Children�s Park. Brand ambassador, Kwabena Kwabena urged Ghanaians to take their health concerns serious and should not wait till they are faced with serious medical ailment before they rush to the hospital. He said statistics at the NCTC indicate that 60% of deaths among adults in the country result from heart-related diseases and stroke, and assured that he will use his platform to educate Ghanaians on heart-related issues. On her part, Ms Baciara said cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in women, causing one in three female deaths. She said the risk factors responsible for heart diseases such as eating fatty foods, as well as the adoption of Western lifestyles are on the increase among ladies in the country. She noted that it was vital to learn the truth about cardiovascular diseases and take the necessary precautions to prevent such sudden deaths. The committee said it has started a healthy heart selfie campaign with the #heartchoices, and entreated Ghanaians to take such selfies and tag them on @worldhealthgh on Instagram and twitter.
