The Ashanti Regional National Democratic Congress (NDC) has postponed the vetting of 106 parliamentary aspirants in the 47 constituencies in the area, Raymond Tandoh, the party’s secretary, has announced.
According to him, the important exercise which was supposed to be chaired by NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, was postponed at the last minute from Tuesday, September 22 to Tuesday, September 29, 2015.
Mr Tandoh explained that the postponement was to make it possible for the party to prepare appropriately in order to carry out the vetting exercise on Tuesday and Wednesday at the party’s office in Kumasi.
He disclosed that 14 people, including Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Asawase MP, Bekwai MCE Mary Jantua and Kwame Adarkwa, Bosome Freho MCE, are contesting unopposed in their various constituencies.
Mr Tandoh said 12 females including Veronica Antwi, MCE for Bosomtwe, Gloria Huze, Deputy Ashanti Regional NDC Women’s Organiser and Catherine Agyeman, NDC Women’s Organiser, Fomena, are among the 106 aspirants.
Speaking in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, he noted that top party people including present and former ministers are also in contention for parliamentary seats in some constituencies in the region.
He mentioned Alexander Ackon, Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Obuasi East; Samuel Yaw Adusei, Deputy Minister, Works and Housing, Bantama; and Samuel Sarpong, ex-Ashanti Regional Minister, Nhyiaeso, as some of the top party people.
Mr Tandoh stated that Johnny Osei Kofi, Deputy Chief of Staff and Daniel Osei, Envoy to Dubai, who are contesting in Asante Akyem North, are some of the top government officials who are also contesting for parliamentary positions in the region.
He said a committee, made up of Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Betty Mould-Iddrisu, Raymond Tandoh and Yaw Obimpeh, Ashanti Regional Chairman, which is headed by Asiedu Nketia, would vet the 106 aspirants.
Mr Tandoh cautioned NDC executives not to openly campaign for any of the candidates, stressing that he was extremely happy about the peaceful nature of the submission of nomination forms so far.
