The Convener for pro opposition group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVC), David Asante, has defended the group’s decision to embark on another march to present their petition over a new voters’ register to the Electoral Commission.
According to David Asante, the group is resolved to employ all legal means possible to make sure its position on the need for a new electoral register is heard.
Political parties and other interested groups had up till September 22 to submit proposals on a petition by the NPP calling for a new voter’s register. Currently, the EC has disclosed that some political parties and groups have submitted their positions on the matter.
An initial march to present a petition to the EC on September 16 turned violent when the police allegedly fired tear gas and subjected some of the protestors to severe beatings for what they said was a diversion of the approved route.
A subsequent decision by the group to embark on the protest on September 22 was also unsuccessful.
But speaking on Citi Fm’s Eye Witness News, David Asante stated that the group will stage another march on Wednesday, September 29 to present their position to the EC.
“Our original intent was to hand over our petition to the EC on the 16th which was within the framework of the deadline that the EC gave …yet it did not happen on the 22nd too and I think that the opportunity for we Ghanaians to have our say on the matter heard must also be respected so we have chosen the 29th of September,” he said.
David Asante also justified the use of protest to back the submission of the group’s take on the electoral register.
“I believe we have every right absolutely to decide and determine the modus operandi through which we will get our grievances communicated across,” he said.
Meanwhile David Asante has ruled out any reason suggesting that their action has been influenced by ‘a political party or malice’
“Our determination to hand over our petition to the EC cannot be referred to as a funfair activity neither can it be motivated by malice,” he stated.
The leadership of Let My Vote Count has in the meantime instructed their lawyers to seek a court order to fight an injunction preventing them from picketing at the Head office of the Electoral Commission (EC).
