The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has, between August 1 and September 25 this year, taken about 152 cases of illegal connections to court.
During the same period, the ECG had detected 123 illegal connections in Accra alone and had realised an amount of GHc 3.23 million out of which Ghc 1.61 million had been paid.
Nana Arthur Forson, the Manager in charge of Commercial Unit, ECG, at a press conference on Wednesday, said the ECG had visited about 36,496 premises and would continue the exercise to cover the entire country.
The ECG on August 1 launched an operation dubbed: “Unearthing Illegal Connection in ECG Operational Areas” with the aim of protecting its revenues which were being lost through illegal connections.
Nana Arthur Forson said luckily ECG had a dedicated court where the judge sat every weekends and the company would not relent on prosecuting its clients who were caught engaged in illegalities.
“Currently we have charged a company called Super Line Limited with Ghc 87 million and will send them to court soon,” he said.
Nana Forson said the exercise was also going on nationwide and urged Ghanaians to be patriotic and report any illegality they suspect, “even if it involved our staff.”
Mr William Boateng, the Public Relations Officer of ECG, said the criminals had become very sophisticated but the ECG was poised to go the extra mile to expose them.
