Male Candidates Have Failed Us

A Female parliamentary aspirant running on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Krowor constituency, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye has said the men who have been representing the constituency in parliament have failed to satisfy “the needs of the vulnerable.”

This she said makes her the choice of the constituents ahead of the 2016 parliamentary elections despite the fact that, she was yet to go through the NPP primary which is yet to be conducted to elect a candidate to represent the NPP in the area.

Speaking to the DAILY HERITAGE in an interview, she explained that, “all through the Fourth Republic, since 1992, it is only the men who have been voted into office as Members of Parliament (MPs).

“It is now a turn of a woman. The men in one way or the other have not satisfied the needs of the vulnerable that is women, children, and the aged. I’m coming as a woman, who understands the needs of the home and for this reason they have already chosen me as better than the men and I’m going to prove to them that, I’m a mother and I know what my people need,” she added.

Touching on why the NPP has failed to win the Krowor seat since 2008, she said, it was because the NPP has over the years, “fielded a candidate who was not really popular with the people, we lost two elections, the 2008 and 2012 elections. Now we have learnt our lessons at Krowor and we (NPP) have taken a firm decision to bring someone who is an indigenous person to contest the Krowor seat. And, I stand tall in this case.”

She said the incumbent National Democratic Congress MP though a native has failed to do anything for the people worth noting and that she would bring dynamism that would address the many challenges facing the people of the area.

“The current MP has been given two terms, he was fortunate enough to be voted for on two consecutive times. In his first term, I can’t recount exactly what he did. He was very healthy and was strong at that time. For now, I know he is not feeling too good, that could also be a reason but, if I could compare his present state and that of his first term, then I will say his performance wasn’t too good,” he stated.

According to her, the twice defeated NPP parliamentary candidate for the area, Lawyer Joseph Ayikoi Otoo failed because he was not a native of the constituency.

“Ayikoi Otoo did not do anything wrong. If there is anything he did wrong, I think it was because he was not popular with the people. Unfortunately, the only problem he had was that he is not a native of Nungua and that was the only reason why he was not voted into power.”

She told the paper that, Lawyer Otoo has given her his blessing and support to contest the Krowor seat.

Assessing her chances ahead of the yet to be announced date for the primary, she said “my chances are very bright. If you look round and you enter the Nungua Township, the only name on their lips is Okoetse Botwebi Afoley.”

“My main message is empowerment of the youth. Empowerment of the youth has been my interest all through my life.”
