Chief Cautions Against Politicisation Of Development Projects

Barima Oppong Yaw Boabasa, Gyaasehene of Dormaa Traditional Area, has cautioned against excessive litigation and politicisation of development projects.

The chief was adding his voice to the controversy generated between the Dormaa Municipal Assembly and members of the Dormaa Market Association over a planned demolition of the central business market(Daily Market) by the Assembly and relocation of traders to the newly built ABB Market.

He said this at the official opening of 24 number new lockable market stores, estimated at GH₡ 280, 771. 97 at ABB in Dormaa - Ahenkro.

Barima Oppong Yaw Boabasa appealed to the people in the area to rally behind the Municipal Assembly as it tries to implement programmes, which enhances their socio-economic well – being and uplift the image of the town.

He said there was no need to create so many rumpuses over the planned demolition of the central business market, as the affected traders still had the option to return to the same market after its completion.

The chief urged the assembly and the Municipal Director of Education to step up efforts at improving the performance of students in the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination as the latest results were abysmal.

Barima Yeboah Kordie, the Aduanahene of the Dormaa Traditional Area, underscored the need to pull down the structures at the central market and raise new ones for the market because of its strategic and commercial location.

Mr Gordon Kwaku Asubonteng, the Municipal Chief Executive said it was not the intention of the assembly to deliberately deprive traders of their source of livelihood but to improve their businesses as well as the revenue generation base of the assembly in order to raise the socio-economic condition of the people.

He refuted allegations that he was embarking on the construction of the complex market for his personal gain.

Mr Richard Adjei Peprah, former assembly member for the area, appealed for the installation of a step up transformer to help solve the problem of low voltage in the area.

He asked for the construction of a borehole to provide potable water to the community.

Currently, traders at the central business area have sought an injunction at the High Court in Sunyani to restrain the assembly from carrying out the planned demolition of the central business market.
