Ambassadors Meet Regional Minister Over Migration

Mr. William Hanna, the Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Ghana and Madam Laura Carpini, the Italian Ambassador to Ghana, have held discussions with Mr. Eric Opoku, the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister on issues of immigration in the Region.

The meeting was focused on the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) implementation of the Ghana Integrated Migration Management Approach (GIMMA) project, which is being supported by the EU through the 10th EU Development Fund (EDF).

The overall objective of the GIMMA project is to contribute to the Government’s efforts to manage migration effectively through the establishment of an integrated migration management approach.

The project aims to enhance the operational capacities of GIS to implement effective migration management measures, increase the awareness of potential migrants on safe and legal migration and alternative livelihood options, as well as to strengthen migration data management in Ghana.

The visit of the two Ambassadors was, therefore, to increase their understanding on the challenges associated with migration and also ascertain the impact of the GIMMA project after visiting the project site.

Mr. Opoku, speaking to the media after the meeting, held behind closed-doors, said some challenges concerning irregular migration were identified through their discussion and they, therefore, attempted to define solutions to them.

He stated that life would be better off in the country if Ghanaians who had tenacity of purpose would collaborate to change the economic environment.

The Controller of Immigration, Faisal Disu, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Commander of GIS, explained that Brong-Ahafo was a major focus of the GIMMA project because of the high rate of irregular migration from the area.
