A poetry recital and storytelling competition was organized by the Delhi Public School International (DPSI), a world class international school in Tema, to help students realize their skills in creative arts. The contest was held at the school premises at Tema community 25 with participation by students from the lower classes. Pupils from class 1 demonstrated their potentials through poem recital while their seniors from class 2 battled each other in storytelling. The students entertained their parents, teachers and colleagues present at the occasion with popular poems and interesting stories including Ghanaian folktales on �Kwaku Ananse�. According to Ms. Shubheksha, a teacher of the school, education is not all about books and for that reason;the school took initiative to organize such a contest to determine the capabilities of the children at their early stages in life. �It�s good to have such program in the school and most at times we just focus on books which I think is wrong because every child has his or her own special potential which might not be in books�, she disclosed. She further added that the extracurricular at the the school also instills confidence in the children that is part of character building that will serve them well in life after school. Ms. Shubheksha also noted that some students have difficulties performing with academic work but perform excellently in arts, dance, acting, and other practical aspects. Speaking in an interview with journalists, the head of academics, Mrs. Helen David noted that the competition will not only bring out the potential in the children but also inculcate confidence when speaking in front of huge audience. She said the exercise will also help the children to do away with shyness and learn how to communicate boldly in public adding that the school is looking forward to involve other schools to take part in the competition next year. Mrs. David stressed that the school cannot accomplish the objectives of the school without the help of parents and therefore pleads for their full cooperation. Parents who shared their thoughts about the competition were impressed about the performance of their children. Mrs. Efia Frimpong, said, �I�m very grateful to the school authorities for organizing such an educative program to instill confidence in the children at this early stage and I�m encouraging them to do more of such program for our kids�. Another parent, Mr. Kofi Kwakyi, said, �I�m overwhelmed by the performance of the kids today especially my boy and I�m planning to throw him a big party tomorrow. I thank the school for organizing this program and I wish to see more of this in the coming years�. DPSI has been honoured by several reputable international bodies. The school won 3 gold trophies and 27 medals at the World Scholar�s Cup recently in Malaysia. The school has also won the National Spelling Bee competition for three consecutive years and recorded the highest performance at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the US last year.
