Wa assembly gets Presiding Member after protracted controversy

Mr. Adams Sulemana, Assembly man for Boli Electoral Area, has been approved overwhelming as the Presiding Member of the Wa Municipal Assembly (WMA) after two months of controversy. He polled all the 26 votes cast in the 27-member assembly in the election which was conducted by Mr. Lucas Yiryel, the Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission. The new Presiding Member failed to get the nod on two occasions as a result of differences that had political undertones with those opposed to his nomination taking an entrenched position. Mr. Adams Iddrisu, the out-going Presiding Member, urged the assembly members to bury their differences and cooperate with the new Presiding Member. He said a Presiding Member was a very serious position and played key roles in the decentralization process and the administration of a district and that office should therefore not be toyed with. Mr. Duogu Yakubu, the Municipal Chief Executive, told the assembly members that the decisions they made in the assembly had tremendous influence and impact on the people that they represented and they should avoid actions that would send wrong signals. Mr. Sulemana thanked his colleagues for eventually endorsing him.
