The Northern Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed shock and dismay at President John Dramani Mahama’s call on Ghanaians to be prepared to pay more for reliable electricity.
The NPP described the call as insensitive, wicked and a disregard to the plight Ghanaians were facing currently, stressing that such a suggestion if implemented would overburden the already poor Ghanaians.
This was contained in a press statement issued in Tamale on Tuesday and signed by Mr Sule Salifu, Northern Regional Secretary of the NPP and made available to the Ghana News Agency.
The statement said the President’s call was an indication that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government had failed to provide reliable energy supply to the good people of Ghana, noting that it equally demonstrated the inability and the lack of competence to put in pragmatic measures to bring an end to the energy crisis.
It stated that the inability of the power Ministry to assure Ghanaians when the energy crisis was ending was a demonstration of lack of vision and capacity to resolve the energy crisis.
The NPP urged tha suffering masses to rally behind it, in its appeal to the Electoral Commission (EC) to replace the current bloated voter’s register with a credible one which would be accepted by all political players in the country.
The statement observed that the continuous existence of the current voters' register if not replaced, could create obstacles for the 2016 general elections, since the party in corroboration with other political parties and civil society organizations would not allow foreigners to decide the fate of Ghanaians.
It called on the National Peace Council, the National House of Chiefs, religious leaders, and the international community, to intervene quickly to ensure the provision of a more credible voters register for the 2016 general elections.
